Do you believe you'll never overcome depression?
In early 2022, The Depression Project posed a question to our 3,000,000+ person social media community:
What negative thoughts are most commonly associated with depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues?
Thousands of people responded, and one of the most common negative thoughts people mentioned was:
âIâm never going to overcome depression.â
After all, when youâre deep in a depressive episode and being bombarded with negative thoughts, feeling consumed with misery and are so exhausted that getting out of bed seems like climbing a mountain, for example, then the idea of being free of this illness can seem completely farfetched.
And, particularly if you always find yourself relapsing back into depression again every time you do feel better, then it can be natural to conclude that youâll never be free of it, and that it will be something thatâll continue to burden you for the rest of your life.
However, the negative thought âIâm never going to overcome depressionâ is just that â a negative thought â as opposed to a fact. Or, put another way, it is possible to overcome depression â regardless of how much your mind may be telling you otherwise.
And, for this reason, weâve put together this cognitive behavioural therapy-based journal, in order to help you:
- See for yourself that this negative thought is not true;
- Moving forwards, feel more hopeful and confident that in time, you can overcome depression, and go on to live the life you want.
Hereâs A Breakdown Of Exactly What This Journal Will Cover
PART 1:Â The Reasons Why You CAN Overcome Depression
Like weâve said, when youâre deep in a depressive episode and consumed with its symptoms, then it can be extremely difficult to be able to imagine yourself ever being free of this illness - particularly if you continuously find yourself relapsing back into depression again every time you feel better. Consequently, in order to overcome the negative thought âIâm never going to overcome depressionâ, it can really help to highlight the reasons why it is indeed possible for you to be able to do so.
So, in Part 1 of this journal, weâll share a variety of these reasons with you, as well as a handful of journal prompts to help you think about and identify the reasons why you in particular can justifiably feel hopeful that, in time, you can overcome your depression.
PART 2: The Five Distorted Thinking Patterns That Fuel The Negative Thought âIâm Never Going To Overcome Depressionâ
âCognitive distortionsâ are distorted thinking patterns that are grounded in some form of bias, and which commonly result in you viewing yourself, the world, and/or a situation much more critically, negatively or pessimistically than you otherwise would. And, when you have the negative thought âIâm never going to overcome depressionâ, youâre almost certainly thinking in a cognitively distorted way without even knowing it. For this reason, itâs extremely important that you identify- and bring awareness to the ways in which you may be doing so.
Why?
Because if youâre able to recognise that the negative thought âIâm never going to overcome depressionâ is indeed a cognitive distortion â as opposed to being an accurate perception of reality â then it will suddenly become much easier for you to dismiss it and push it from your mind (or at the very least, this negative thought will likely lose some of its power over you).
With that being said, in the second part of this journal:
- Weâll identify five cognitive distortions that the negative thought âIâm never going to overcome depressionâ is commonly grounded in;
- Weâll share a variety of guided journal prompts with you in order to help you think about and pinpoint the ways in which this negative thought is distorted for you in particular, and as a result, is a lie that your depression is telling you as opposed to a fact.
PART 3: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Techniques To Further Help You Overcome The Negative Thought âIâm Never Going To Overcome Depressionâ Anytime It Is Triggered
Once youâve completed Parts 1 and 2 of this journal, then it can result in you taking a big, big step towards letting go of the negative thought âIâm never going to overcome depressionâ. And, as a result:
- Moving forwards, you are likely to think this negative thought much less frequently;
- Moving forwards, any time you do think this negative thought, it is likely to not be as strong of a negative thought as it was previously, nor cause you to feel as hopeless.
However, there may still be times when you think this negative thought, which is why in Part 3 of this journal, weâll share with you some additional tried, tested, cognitive behavioural therapy techniques to help you overcome it anytime it is triggered.
Additionally, each technique we share with you will also be accompanied by one or more guided journal prompts - in order to help you think about how you could implement that technique as effectively as possible.
